crocs

Crocs became very popular this summer, though they've been around for a while, as many gradeschoolers and chefs will attest to. I was introduced to them last fall by my neices and nephews in Hawaii. All 4 of them, ages 2 through 12, were sportin' the Crocs, and they looked so damn cute on them...and comfy. You've seen them. They're all over now. Not just on kids, on adults. Nordstrom even carries them. But this is one more foot fashion trend that I can't get on board with. Let's face facts people: as comfy as they might be, they're just not that attractive. They're the summer's version of Uggs (one of the other foot fashion trends that I can't do. Round-toed dress shoes is another one.). Sorry if I'm offending anybody who owns a pair of any of these! =) ***EDIT 08-09-06: I should have clarified that I don't have anything against Uggs per se, but that I think they're unattractive when they're being showcased as a fashion statement, like when paired with miniskirts. For warmth and comfort in the winter, fine, but with a miniskirt?***

I admit, I tried on a pair at my local Sportmart, and honestly contemplated getting a pair. I tried to convince myself that they'd be perfect for walking the dog, especially when he goes traipsing in the dirt and mud with me right behind, b/c I could just rinse them off with running water. I wanted so badly to love them, and take them home, and wear them to all the bbq's and festivals this summer. And I did love the feel of them on my feet. But, alas, I kept looking down at them on my feet, and the snob in me just kept screaming, "But they're not cute!" Let's not kid ourselves, Cute is important. Don't underestimate the power of Cute. Cute can make or break a deal. And so, I left Sportmart without any Crocs. And, yes, when I'm in the shoe department at Nordstrom, I always stop and look at them for a moment and sigh. *sigh*

But guess what?? They come in flip-flops now!! And we all know how I feel about flip-flops! And they're kind of cute! And even though the LAST thing I need is ANOTHER pair of flip-flops, I went against my better judgement and ordered a pair for myself online (pictured below). Hey, I'm going to Maui next month, I live in flip-flops when I'm in Hawaii so they'll be put to good use.....

Cute is definitely a deal-breaker. I understand your hesitation in sporting crocs. The utilitarian functionality is there, no doubt. But my jury's still out too on the Mario Batali look for footwear. I do think the flip-flop choice is right on--a way to test the quality and feel of a designer in a tried-and-true vehicle.

my opinion is to stay away from crocs. i have bad images of crazed hippies at the last phil lesh concert i went to - all of them sporting crocs. those flip flips you added were cute though.
